TechnicalThe Delete KeyThe delete key does not delete data it simply erases the link to the data, it unlinks the file from the file directory system. This data will remain there until the operating system reuses those sectors to write new data which can be a lengthly process. Disk Wiping (Green Option) Wiping works by not only by unlinking a file but also specifically overwriting it, multiple times, with garbage data. This is a green option as the disk can normally be reused or recycled afterwards. Wiping removes everything on the disk including operating systems and other software, DiskWipe will not reload/restore this. Disk Degaussing The process of reducing or eliminating an unwanted magnetic field, once degaussed, the hard disk will be unusable. Data is stored in magnetic media, such as hard drives, by making tiny areas called magnetic "domains" change their magnetic alignment to be in the direction of an applied magnetic field, Degaussing leaves these domains in random patterns with no preference to orientation. Physical Destruction Physically breaking up and destroying the hard disk and all its componants. Once destroyed, the hard disk will be unsalvagable. Acid & Fire Destruction Research has shown that only destruction by acid or by fire offer 100% data deletion guarentees. Although we wil be offering acid "Platter Baths" later this year destruction by fire is a little more tricky as it requires temperatures of around 660 C. Neither method is environmentally friendly. The decision to wipe, smash or degauss largely depends on whether there is an intention for the disk to be re-used or not and whether the disk is in good working order, only fully operational disks can be effectively wiped. If you are really worried, opt for a combo WipeSmash. Something else to consider is the age and capacity of the disk, as technology moves faster than ever before your once prized hard disk may not hold much recycle value. For any business, wiping young disks is a great way to recycle by re-issue. |
